KickBeat Brings Music Combat to the Vita

Neil Sorens, creative director at Zen Studios, recently went into detail about his latest PS Vita title, KickBeat. The game tells the story of an unlikely hero who must fight for control of the world’s music. What’s unique about this title, beyond the Kung Fu hero fighting for the sake of music, is the combat. It builds on the ideas behind such titles as Guitar Hero, but instead of different colored lights telling the player what to do, button presses will correspond with attacking enemies. The enemies will attack from the four cardinal directions and you must punch and kick with the beat of the song. To do this, you simply press the corresponding direction on the d-pad or face button.

The music included encompasses a pretty wide variety of tracks ranging from Rob Zombie and In Flames, to a Taiwanese rapper named Shen Yi. Sorens also mentioned the possibility of using your own music to create unique combat situations. No specifics were given as to how this will be done, but Sorens stated it will be as simple as customizing a few settings. KickBeat has been in development since 2009 and will be showing at E3, so look for more information soon.
