If you’re living in the Oceania region and were looking forward to Telltale Games’ latest efforts, The Walking Dead based on the popular series of graphic novels of the same name, then… well… tough.
According to a post on Telltale’s forums, upon being asked why their Store icon leads to no content, staff member Mike replied, “Sorry, but due to the OFLC ratings laws in Australia and New Zealand, and the fact that this is a mature game, we do not currently have plans to release the game there on consoles.” However, The Walking Dead has been released unrated on Steam within the very same regions.
Australia currently has laws in place where the Office of Film and Literature Classifications reserve the right to refuse classification to games that do not fit into the MA15+ (Mature Audiences, 15 and above) category. This is because Australia currently does not allow the distribution of R18+ games. However, over the last couple of years there has been a huge push from numerous political voices who believe this needs to change – especially after 89,000 Aussie citizens contributed to a petition arguing for an adult rating. New Zealand on the other hand, does indeed have an R18+ rating mandated by their own classification board.
What’s interesting about TWD’s situation is that the game wasn’t even submitted for review by the OFLC. Instead Telltale decided to nip it in the bud and not release it after all. TWD’s Store icon is still visible on the AU Store as of this publishing.
We’ll keep you informed of any further developments.
