Gamers from way back when may remember when they/their friends flipped out over the inclusion of “co-operative” play in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for SEGA MegaDrive/Genesis. The reason we flipped out was because it was almost secret – there was no prompt to tell us that plugging in a second controller lets that person play as Tails, other than the separate head-to-head race mode. Thankfully, we’re getting similar treatment in Spring’s Sonic 4: Episode 2 however in a much more substantial way.
No more will the second player just be some yellow ball whizzing past the screen. In Sonic 4: Episode 2 Sonic will be able to fully interact with Tails allowing them to overcome obstacles or avoid danger. There are three combo moves that help in this regard: the Combo Copter which has Tails flying and lifting Sonic to previously unreachable areas; the Submarine Combo that utilises the fox’s tails as a propeller and allows Sonic to finally swim; and the Rolling Combo that combines Tails’ and Sonic’s spin abilities into one giant ball of destruction.
Furthermore, this co-op functionality will be available in single-player and two-player modes, both online and off. According to the PlayStation Blog more details regarding collaborative play are forthcoming, so we’ll be keeping you up to date as they’re announced.
