Playstation 4 announcement factsheet

PlayStation_4_logo

Sony’s Playstation 4 press conference has now come and gone and it sure was an interesting ride. What did we learn from it, then? Here’s PSN Fans’ quick brief on the new miracle machine!

Hardware

While the actual, physical PS4 wasn’t shown at all, the preliminary specs were announced and are as follows:

Main Processor Single-chip custom processor
CPU : x86-64 AMD “Jaguar”, 8 cores
GPU : 1.84 TFLOPS, AMD next-generation Radeon™ based graphics engine
Memory GDDR5 8GB
Hard Disk Drive Built-in
Optical Drive
(read only)
BD 6xCAV
DVD 8xCAV
I/O Super-Speed USB (USB 3.0) 、AUX
Communication Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T)
IEEE 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth® 2.1(EDR)
AV output HDMI
Analog-AV out
Digital Output (optical)

It seems that Sony has taken some valuable lessons from their experiences with the PS3, a console notoriously difficult to develop games for. PS4 is touted as being much more developer friendly, and the much higher amount of memory (compared to PS3′s 256MB for system memory and 256MB for video memory) and a much more common CPU type especially support this angle.

PS Vita price cut, Japan only

psvita

AS if there was not enough hype around Sony Entertainment this week, the company announced a price drop for the PS Vita. Japanese consumers will be able to enjoy a significant savings (nearly 5,000 yen) on the portable device, paying 19,980 yen ($215) for the Wi-Fi version and 29,980 yen ($323) for the 3G. Even though Sony has confirmed with Eurogamer that there are no immediate plans for a drop in Europe (or the US for that matter), it should not be too surprising if this comes to pass in next few days.

It would be an excellent time to hop on board with the Vita as the 2013 line-up is considerably more interesting than 2012. Valhalla Knights 3, God Eater 2, Phantasy Star Online 2 and Soul Sacrifice are being dangled in front of Japanese gamers with plenty more titles inbound.

Hopefully the future of the PS Vita is hinted to this Wednesday as Sony’s announcement hits 6pm EST.

PS Vita refusing to display more than 100 apps

Vita_100_App_Cap

The PlayStation Vita has definitely had its fair share of bumps in the road since launch. From lower then expected launch sales, to underwhelming over hyped games, the Vita has struggled to live up to everyone’s standards and expectations. Sony has done everything they can think of to change this, in house AAA titles, cross-buy/play/save, even apps like Crackle, YouTube and Pandora.

These small things have definitely helped, but simple slip ups on Sony’s part still hinders the evolution of the Vita. It seems like with each update to the software, Sony fixes one problem and creates another. Recently NeoGAF member Shagg_187 has discovered that even if you have a 32GB memory card with plenty of free space, that the Vita still refuses to show more then 100 apps. What makes this even weirder is that you can install more than 100 apps, the Vita just refuses to show anything beyond 100.

Sony patents pre-owned game blocking tech.

Preusedpatent2

Sony probably won’t be winning any new supporters with its newest patent, possibly making the concept of selling used games obsolete.

This new technology allows a console to tag a game and check, whether it’s being used on other consoles or on other people’s accounts. If it is, the playback may be disallowed.

Time will tell if this is actually going to be one of the new features of PS4, or if Sony will bend against the outcry of consumers. Disallowing used games would be a big blow, affecting everyone from users to retailers to game tournament organizers.

Sony’s rationalization has to do with redistributing the sales proceeds more towards developers, but one has to wonder if used games are actually as big of a problem as they say.

You can check out the full patent application here.

Sony pulls UNO to stop hackers

UNO_Logo

Hackers have once again figured out how to exploit the Vita.

This time around UNO is apparently the game of choice. As always Sony has responded by pulling the game from the PlayStation Store. This of course is not the first time Sony has had to deal with this problem. In the past, such games as MotorStorm: Arctic Edge and Gravity Crash Portable have also been exploited through custom game saves.

Have no fear though, the games have always made there way back to the store after a short period of time. It is just a matter of figuring out how they are exploiting the system and making a patch. If you already own UNO, you can still play it and use it as normal. The only effect this will have is it will require an update once the game goes live again in the PlayStation Store.
