Weekly News Catch-Up: June 3rd

We here at PSN Fans love news: release dates, gameplay trailers, hardware details… You name it. However we can’t always report on everything that trickles out of the news machine, which is where Weekly News Catch-Up comes in. Here we cover some of the stories that didn’t make it to the front page the first time around.

On tap this week: Tomba!/Tombi! gets a release date, Assassin’s Creed III and Medal of Honour installments coming to Vita, debut trailer for a new Vita title and more details regarding Sony’s rumoured game streaming service.

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation Coming to Vita (NeoGAF, via Destructoid)
In a post by a NeoGAF forum member, it seems popular print outlet Game Informer has the scoop on an upcoming Assassin’s Creed installment, subtitled Liberation. One of the most interesting features of the game is its female lead protagonist, which is a first for the series. AC fans may remember however that the Assassin’s guild isn’t male-exclusive; there have been various female assassins mentioned throughout the universe. Liberation’s lead character is Aveline and is of the time period between 1765-1780 in New Orleans. Much like III’s protagonist Connor, Aveline will be of multicultural descent despite the North American setting – the post mentions she is of “black” and French descent.

Around mid-2011 an Assassin’s Creed game was announce for Vita, but no other details were given. Now, it’s apparent that the game will land on October 30th, which is the same date as III. Presumably we’ll hear more about this in the coming week at E3.

Medal of Honour: Warfighter May Also Be Coming to Vita (VG247)

It seems French retailer CDiscount has a pre-order listing available for the currently un-announced Medal of Honour: Warfighter for Vita. With this listing coming just days short of the world’s biggest video game trade show, it’s a safe bet that EA will be releasing more details regarding this new Vita entry in the series in the coming days.

Tomba!/Tombi! Release Date (Joystiq)
It’s coming in the week of June 19th for $9.99US.

Sony Partnering with Gaikai for Game Streaming Service (Games Industry.biz)
According to a report by Games Industry, sources close to the outlet have revealed that Sony is teaming up with online game streaming service Gaikai to bring PS1 and PS2 games to their distribution. Despite a “no comment” return from both Sony and Gaikai, GI and the rest of the internet have been buzzing around the idea of a game streaming service on Sony’s platforms, with speculation suggesting the service may come to the PS3, Vita, tablets, phones and even Bravia televisions. The ambitious nature of the service has also been estimated to include 3rd party support, given the recent successes of numerous HD ports. Like almost all other pieces of news recently, E3 should shed some light on this topic. Keep your eyes on PSN Fans for more details if they come.
